D89 managed to sit down with one of the hardest UK artists out there at the moment, JSB. Catch the interview after the jump..

How long have you been in the game?

As an artist I will say 3 years now, but I have been into music since the age of 12,

listening to artists such as 2pac, Big L, Method Man, Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G and Nas. Music has always been something I was into but never took really serious, until 3 years ago when I bought my own studio equipment after no one would let me use there’s. I studied it and began to make my 1st mixtape (Born To Rise Vol.1).

What made you want to become an artist?

I have always been into music, but never really saw a career in it for myself until I really started listening to artists like Nas and Jay-Z a lot and coming into the hip hop lifestyle. The first time I felt that this was the career for me, was when I and my boy (ADR9) used to set up two tape recorders at his house and use one to record our voice and the other to play the instrumental, and we would freestyle for hours. I would go back to his house all the time and just want to keep on doing it, that’s when I first felt the passion to want to become an artist.

What projects are you currently working on?

Truth of The Town 3 is still the main focus at the moment, so I’m working hard currently to promote that. I’m shooting a video for the song “It’s You” which is on the mixtape in the next couple of weeks, and also I recently just shot a documentary just to show people who I am and how I started and also what I’m looking to do in the near future. In terms on music… I’m working on my next mixtape that should be out early in the New Year and also the Young Future mixtape entitled “Future Has Begun”, which again should hopefully be out before the end of the year so look out for that hosted by my boy DJ Ames.

Which other artists have you worked with during your career?

Artists I have worked with in the UK include Darkboi, Nutty P, and the man of the moment Talay Riley. We grew up in the same area, although we never actually recorded a song together… he would always come to my studio for me to help him with songs and dance mixes he was working on. I have also worked with a lot of artists in the US, but… the one I enjoy working with the most is a RNB/Soul Singer called Cavasiia. This guy is so talented and you guys need to check him out, me and him worked on a song called “Aint No Other Way” on Truth of the Town 3 and that’s my favorite track on the mixtape. He just brings a good vibe when we collaborate and we will definitely be working on some new material soon.

How do you feel the mixtape series ‘Truth of the Town’ has done for

your career?

During recording this mixtape series, I have grown a lot as not only an artist but also a lyricist. I say this because, coming from the first one to the current mixtape, I let go of the pen and now draw inspiration from within and write everything in my head. The whole of Truth of the Town 2 & 3, I never wrote down and its come to a point now where writing down feels weird. I always used to hear that artists did it but never thought I would, however I have come to that point and it feels good. It’s also brought me a lot of contacts and producers that have helped me along the way and still are to this point and made people around me realize my talent and made them want to help me in what they can. This has been a big positive and helped me be able to see a future and begin to plan what I’m going to do next.

Do you find it hard to create records?

Not at all… everything comes from the heart and that’s why I put the pen down. I feel when you’re writing your lyrics down on paper to recite into the mic, it’s almost like reading a script or following a guideline to the flow you have created on paper. When I do it from up top I can be as free with the flow and delivery as I want, and be able to feel the music instead of writing things down, so no I don’t find it hard at all.

What type of beats do you find you can work best with?

I’m very versatile when it comes to the beats I choose to vocal, but I prefer mellow real hip hop beats something I can tell a story on and let you know how I feel about the situation whatever it may be at the time. I draw inspiration from tracks like “Never Change” by Jay-Z, and “The Message” and a lot of other tracks by Nas. With that said I still love my club anthems and beats that I can speak to the ladies on, so I’m really open when it comes to beats I work on.

What’s the deal with your movement? You seem to have quite a roster

You’ve built up?

Young Future Entertainment is really at the beginning stages and we are still looking for more talented artists and producers to join this powerful movement. The artists that are a part of the movement are Lynk and DJ Riot whom are both very talented. We are looking to break real hip hop into the UK music market, because at the moment there is no real representation of it and we want to be the people who you think of when someone asks you “Who is UK hip hop?”

Will we be seeing an album from yourself or anyone in your movement

In the near future?

I’m currently looking into starting my album in the near future, but for now I’m looking into getting in touch with the right producers and industry people to make it a successful and ground breaking album. As for Young Future, when I feel we have come to the point where I’m happy with the talent that we have to offer, I will begin to look into the possibility of a Young Future album or promo cd.

Who has helped you most during your career?

There have really been a lot of people that have helped me in my career, but the two that have been the most supportive and helpful are my boy Adr9 and my cousin Akin. Adr9 really helped me at the beginning of my career to develop my talent by teaching me how to operate and studio and how to get the best out my voice when recording a song. I just took that and built my own style so he really helped me build a foundation. Akin has been there for me in my career no matter what, may it be taking me to performances, to investing in my career, and he is still with me now supporting the Young Future movement. He is someone that I will always have around me. Most recently it has been my boy Abel (aka Banks), he is one of the realest people I know, he lets me know when I’m not going hard as he knows I can and is also someone I will want to always have around me in the future.

What’s the best piece of advice you have been given?

The best advice I have got came recently from my boy Abel, when he told me I should “Work Hard And Never Give Myself Permission To Fail”. I never understood what it meant at first, then I realised later that all the excuses I was giving myself not to get things done was giving myself permission to fail. That piece of advice inspired me so much… I put it on my wall and I read it every day before I went to sleep, and when I wake up just to remind myself why I’m doing what I’m doing, and how I should be able to do anything to reach my goal in life.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

There are so many creative and talented artists out there I would love to work with, but if I could narrow it down in the UK, Taio Cruz is talented andLeona Lewis is someone I feel I could work on something good with. Also Wretch32, because I feel he is the only guy from the UK that I feel as a rapper. Now if we’re talking in general, I want to work with Lil’ Wayne, Jay-Z, Nas, Trey Songz, and a lot more. Production wise, definitely Timberland, The Neptunes and Kanye West. These are all people I would love to work with in the future.

Do you plan to get out on the road and perform live?

Yes.In this country, I have recently withinin the last 2 years have been touring in Africa on the “Africa Against Aids Tour “ but I’m looking to really getting out in the UK and beginning to promote my music here, so that’s something I definitely want to do in the coming year.

How can producers/artists/djs get at you?

I’m so open to work with new people. If you would like to contact me to work on some music or get some music or drops off me holla at me @ (jsbmusic@live.co.uk) or (www.twitter.com/jsbuk) and for artists and producers interested in Young Future Ent hit us up at (youngfutureent@live.co.uk)

15. From your twitter, you seem like a massive football manager fan.

Who you currently managing?

Hahahaha…. Yeah I’m a big fan of Football Manager. I’m currently managing my fave team, Man United, but to be honest I have not even finished one season because I’ve been so busy promoting Truth Of The Town 3. But yeah, when I get a moment I load it up and get my Alex Ferguson on lol!

What are your plans for 2010?

I would say look out for many new projects from me! I have been offered a few situations at the moment and I’m currently looking into them and hopefully it will help me move forward in 2010. My real plan for 2010 is to release my video and begin to tour the country and hopefully begin recording my debut album, and with how the end of the year is going it’s all looking possible, so look out for JSB and Young Future in 2010.

Any shout outs?

Shout out to Dennerz for getting at me to do this interview, and also my team Young Future Entertainment and all my sponsors and people that are helping me promote Truth Of The Town 3 Out Now (Rago Magazine, DJ Ames, Tawag promotions, Rap Star Promo, Street Report Magazine GiGi Capone (Hustle Hard TV)) just to name a few and to all the people that have downloaded the mixtape: THANK YOU! I will continue to give you good quality UK Hip Hop music so WATCH THIS SPACE………….

We were lucky enough to conduct an interview with the UK Mixtape Messiah himself, DJ Ames. Check after the jump as he discusses the UK mixtape scene, his award-winning tapes, and the artists he’d love to work with.

Yo Ames, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take this interview. To begin with, what made you want to start releasing mixtapes?

I feel it’s a great way to promote and hear new music and I’m all about that. It only made sense to get into it myself, plus I used to buzz of my DJ Clue mixtapes that were actually on cassette not CD.

What was the first ever tape you released?

It was an actually an album called Raw Talent Volume 1, which was a double CD full of just UK artists only. It was fun and was a big step towards creating the person I am today.

What was your first tape with a ‘major’ star?

I mainly mess with independent artists so the major artists I have are not major artists in the UK scene, so I can’t really class them as major stars.

Do you enjoy working with everyone on your tapes or are some more difficult than others?

Not every project is the same, so some go smoothly and some are the worse LOL

How do you think your albums fared?

Money wise, the album did poor but did me a great job in terms promotion. But it wasn’t the intention to make money, it was always a promotion thing first.

Now your stature has grown, do you believe you can take it to the next level and release an album with greater success? Many see you as the UK equivalent to Drama or Khaled..

That is definitely the next step, so towards the end of 2010 I can shed some more light on this situation.

Which UK acts are you currently promoting?

I’m currently working with a few: Big Dirtz, JSB, Manny Moscow, Flex The Truth & Cyclonious.

Do you think the workrate and output of artists such as Gucci Mane and Lil’ Wayne can be emulated successfully by a UK artist?

It all depends on how much they want it and how well they network. Currently with the UK Market not being that great, I would have to say no.

Have you managed to give up work and concentrate on a full time career in the music industry?

Yes I finally gave up last July to put more time and effort into this.

I know you set up Team Ames, but have you thought about setting up your own record label/music group like Drama and Khaled have done?

There are no plans as of yet due to time, but not saying it’s not something that could happen in the future.

What is the situation with The Aphilliates? It’s a big look for the UK you reppin’ out there.

I’m not official with them I just do work with their artists and DJ’s.

When do you next plan on heading overseas?

I’m over there in March for the SEA Awards in Memphis and I could be over there an extra month or so but nothing is confirmed yet.

Do you go into studios much to review artists?

I don’t.

Do you find that it is often difficult to get the right response from artists when you approach them? Or due to your success do you find that many more artists are now reaching out to you?

Each artist is different so sometimes people will respond straight away and sometimes they won’t; it definitely does help though if you have a name for yourself.

Do artists from the UK have a different attitude/approach to working with you than those in the US?

Yes they do have a very different attitude, but I tend to work with the ones that have a good work ethic and have set goals etc…

If you could work with one artist on any project, who and what would it be?

Well theres 2 not 1 LOL Gucci Mane & Yo Gotti.

What future projects do you have in the pipeline?

I have a lot going on; too much to list so keep checking www.myspace.com/djamesuk & www.djamesuk.co.uk for updates.

Other than music, do you have any other side ventures or hustles?

I don’t at this present time

Thanks for the interview Ames, and best of luck for the future. Any shout outs before we conclude?

Shouts to D89 Entertainment, Mr PR So Sincere & The Fleet DJ’s.

Shouts also to everyone that supports what I do and that I have worked with.

Here at D89 Entertainment, we aim to do our very best to promote UK talent in particular. After witnessing Gucci Mane release his three mixtape series (Guccimerica, Brrrussia and Great Brrrritain) in one day, assisted by 3 seperate DJs, I began to ponder on the effect on the UK game if an artist was able to provide the same amount of output as Gucci.

Sure, the music itself would be different, and its also possible to argue that the differing markets of the US rap and the UK rap scene make such a feat impossible, but just think… Would it actually be a bad thing on the UK rap game?

Many would argue that artists such as Lil’ Wayne and Gucci Mane have saturated the US market with mixtape after mixtape, leaving many fans fed up. However Gucci’s three releases on one day were met with tremendous anticipation, particularly on the internets, who feed on all of the mixtapes already put in place by the So Icey Boy.

Focusing on the UK market in particular, are we actually in the right place to be able to provide the output that these US artists can provide on a regular basis?

I don’t think we are there yet…but I do believe we are not far off at all. We have the talent and creativity to provide the goods, yet the masses it reaches are still quite limited. Artists such as LATE have proved that hard work can reap benefits, with hundreds of features, tapes and albums released. This has opened the doors to an affiliation with the Texan rap scene, aligining himself with artists such as K-Rino and The Grit Boyz. Backed by the formiddable UK rap scene heavyweight TRICKSTA, Late has been able to move the UK forward. Tricksta himself has shown that breaking into the US market and emulating that success is possible, with production and DJ sets for the likes of Chamillionaire and Stat Quo to name a few.

But what about the new breed? Certainly the UK has a core roster of extremely talented DJs, but many of these are focused on promoting home-grown music such as grime/funky/pop. This is where DJ AMES stands out. He works tirelessly with artists from around the globe and has worked with many big labels such as Grand Hustle, Slip-N-Slide and DTP. His work has not gone unrecognised either, with the mixtape legend himself DJ Drama initiating him into the Aphilliates camp, leading to hosting tapes for artists such as Willie The Kid and La The Darkman. His award as the Best Newcomer at the 2009 SEA Awards shows the influence he is able to have, putting the UK on the mixtape map.

Artists such as Manny Moscow are able to hold their own against many from the US as well. Alongside further UK acts such as SAS, Bigz, Haze and the rest of the Eurogang, the UK rap scene is flourishing.

However will we able to find an artist willing and ready to deliver the same amount of output as some of their bigger US counterparts? I believe we will. The creative element and talent is already there, it just needs someone to produce it on a very regular basis. Backed by a super producer or DJ with influence, a talented UK artist should grab the torch and make moves within the US, allowing another door to open. Hopefully, time will tell.

Honourable mentions: Cerose and JMC.
